March 15th 2010.

Area Baseball Coaches
The area college baseball coaches gave their outlook on the season.  Spanky McFarland drew laughs when he gave away two pairs of tickets to the Dukes new stadium. One to whomever could tell him how many Major League pitchers he had coached or developed, an impressive 11, and another pair to whomever could give the answer to how many runs his pitchers had given up in their most recent game, a less than impressive 29.
November 2009

JMU's Matt Brady and Kenny Brooks, Bridgewater's Don Burgess and Jean Willi, and EMU's Kirby Dean and Kevin Griffin.  This year Coach Kirby went before Coach Brooks, and claimed he was "playing nice."   Once again the two coaches ribbed each other to the comic delight of one of the largest crowds in some time for the club, as the coaches meeting is one of the best year in and year out.  Coach Brady said his team would be a winner this year, and BC Coaches Burgess and Willi gave a preview of their upcoming campaigns.

Jan 2009

At our January  meeting ,#38Jerry Venable, a career Harlem Globetrotter, told us about growing up in family of basketball stars with a great high school coach, who was like a father to him and a lifelong friend.

The November 2008 meeting featured the areas college basketball coaches.

JMU Coach Kenny Brooks poked his usual fun at some of the other coaches, especially Coach Kirby Dean and his abilities or lack thereof on the hardwoods in their old Valley District day.  Coach Kirby got him back by unveiling and roasting a blowup of Coach Brooks' bobblehead doll.  We met two new coaches, JMU's Matt Brady and BC's Don Burgess.
Coach Burgess said his kids getting out of bed on the wooden floorboards of their home was reminiscent of the famed Roger Bergey stomp.  Coach Jean Willi of the Eagles humorously recanted the problems of early season practices and a preseason bus breakdown.  And Coach Kevin Griffin poked good natured fun at Coach Dean by revealing a chart of Kirby's many appearances in the newspaper and on air and dubbing him the valley's Media Darling, saying he was told when he took the job that "if Kirby goes up the street for a hamburger, the newspaper's gonna write an article about him."

Lee Williams, Bridgewater College golf coach, was honored for his teams amazing success at the meeting as well.

"Like seeing a standup comedian"

January 2008

November 2007

Coaches from JMU, Bridgewater and EMU met with the couple do discuss prospects for the upcoming season.  Every year this is one of the best meetings because the coaches are so familiar with so many of the club members.  Everyone is undefeated at this point in the season, with high hopes for a good year, but realistic expectations are discussed from the podium. Coach Dean of EMU and Coach Wili of Bridgewater talked about their young teams, while Coach Leatherman and Coach Keener talked about their experience.  Coach Brooks was able to shed light on the NCAA tournament team, and the prospects of a tough 2007-2008 schedule.

August 2007
George Allen
UVA Quarterback

Allen did not talk politics ...only about his life as son of Football Hall of Fame Coach George Allen, and his time as a UVA quarterback.  A football card of Coach Allen and a list of principles from the Allen family were handed out to club members.
September 2007
Mickey Matthews and Mike Clark

JMU & Bridgewater Football

The two coaches previewed the remainder of the season. Coach Clark spoke of how he helps student athletes where the job of coach includes much more than on the playing field.   Coach Matthews exhibited his usual sense of humor including a classic story about his call from Sports Illustrated.  Ask any club member who was there for the story.  Clover Hill Bucks Manager Mike Martin was honored by the SVAC.

October 2007
Lindsay Czarniak from NBC 4 in Washington, The Sports Machine, NASCAR and Olympics Coverage.  The JMU grad told her stories of breaking into the business, and related personal stories of reporting on Redskins coaches, players, and legends.  In a lengthy question and answer session with the club, she told stories of the Redskins locker room, the stories of drama and  comedy around  NASCAR superstars in the pits and the garages,
