2017 SVAC Members Survey Results

Summary (Complete results below)
1. Most or our members have a very positive overall experience with SVAC.
2. Most members enjoyed the speakers we have had this year.
3. Membership is fine with $40 dues.
4. Most suggested we pay our speakers $250.
5. Members seemed very content with the service, location, food, & dinner costs at Early’s. We need to inform our membership more often that $18 covers a lot more than the food (tip, tax, drinks, the cost of the location—it’s like paying for about a $12 meal.)
6. Membership felt the Honor Roll should continue to honor Club members only.
7. Membership leaned toward an earlier starting time but was split.
8. We received good recommendations on potential Honor Roll inductees, speakers for the coming year, and over 35 suggestions for new members.
9. Our football & basketball coaches’ presentations are well loved—far more than any other speakers.
10. Following the local football/basketball coaches, Tony Bennett, Mickey Dean and Carlyle Whitlow were top vote getters for potential speakers.
11. When asked who are the teams you root for, the top 4 in order were JMU, Redskins, Bridgewater College and Turner Ashby HS.
12. Regarding additional suggestions, there were generally 3 areas: meetings, membership, and publicity.

    1. What suggestions do you have to benefit SVAC for the 2017-18 year:

    1. Dinner Meetings:

    1. Have more write-up about each speaker in email invitation
    2. Have Board members greet & welcome members & guests at the door
    3. Highlight deserving local coaches & players at dinner meetings, allowing brief remarks
    4. Mention at each meeting the SVAC purpose, mission, & goals keeping members informed & educating guests
    5. Come up with a better system for which table eats first
    6. Get a raised platform & better lighting for speakers
    7. Visually enhance the SVAC organization at dinner meetings, using displays, banners
    8. Highlight members’ birthdays during opening remarks (members could stand who have/had birthday that month)
    9. Pre-determine a specific week, or a specific day of the week, for each month’s dinner
    10. Avoid Wednesday nights, as churches often have meetings then
    11. Stop having trivia quiz to determine eating order
    12. Cancel dinners when registrations are below 45
    13. Earmark funds for sign language interpreters
    14. Keep food prices as low as possible
    15. Vary locations of dinner meetings

    1. Membership:

    1. Offer incentives (financial or otherwise) to members who recruit new members
    2. Need to increase our membership, especially focusing on younger members
    3. Need more enthusiasm, involvement & participation among our members
    4. Utilize current members to recruit new members—set up a system
    5. Continue to ask membership their opinions on speakers and other suggestions, etc.
    6. Plan bus outings to Washington or Baltimore for summer baseball games

    1. Publicity:

    1. Provide better advance notice & scheduling of upcoming meetings—need more than a few weeks’ notice.
    2. Advertise in the DNR for membership
    3. Promote dinner meeting information/invitation in DNR Club Notes section.
    4. Invite media to attend, encouraging their publicity of SVAC
    5. Ask Bob Corso to interview SVAC President, other members on his TV show
    6. Publicize SVAC using free air times with local TV, radio & newspapers.
    7. Display a welcome sign in front of Early’s promoting SVAC the night of dinner meeting
    8. Consider a college intern (perhaps Recruit-A-Duke at JMU or from Curt Dudley) for better website, social network presence, membership retention and growth.
