November 2007

Coaches from JMU, Bridgewater and EMU met with the couple do discuss prospects for the upcoming season.  Every year this is one of the best meetings because the coaches are so familiar with so many of the club members.  Everyone is undefeated at this point in the season, with high hopes for a good year, but realistic expectations are discussed from the podium. Coach Dean of EMU and Coach Wili of Bridgewater talked about their young teams, while Coach Leatherman and Coach Keener talked about their experience.  Coach Brooks was able to shed light on the NCAA tournament team, and the prospects of a tough 2007-2008 schedule.

August 2007
George Allen
UVA Quarterback

Allen did not talk politics ...only about his life as son of Football Hall of Fame Coach George Allen, and his time as a UVA quarterback.  A football card of Coach Allen and a list of principles from the Allen family were handed out to club members.
September 2007
Mickey Matthews and Mike Clark

JMU & Bridgewater Football

The two coaches previewed the remainder of the season. Coach Clark spoke of how he helps student athletes where the job of coach includes much more than on the playing field.   Coach Matthews exhibited his usual sense of humor including a classic story about his call from Sports Illustrated.  Ask any club member who was there for the story.  Clover Hill Bucks Manager Mike Martin was honored by the SVAC.

October 2007
Lindsay Czarniak from NBC 4 in Washington, The Sports Machine, NASCAR and Olympics Coverage.  The JMU grad told her stories of breaking into the business, and related personal stories of reporting on Redskins coaches, players, and legends.  In a lengthy question and answer session with the club, she told stories of the Redskins locker room, the stories of drama and  comedy around  NASCAR superstars in the pits and the garages,
and what it is like to be mentored by George Michael.  The SVAC honored Ritchie Anderson, Coach of the Turner Ashby State Championship Baseball Team.

BACKGROUND

The Shenandoah Valley Athletic Club is a non-profit organization created to bring together inhabitants of the Shenandoah Valley, from Lexington to Woodstock, who share a common interest in scholastic, intercollegiate, and professional athletics.

OUR MISSION

The Mission of the Shenandoah Valley Athletic Club is to promote friendship, camaraderie, and goodwill among the inhabitants of the Shenandoah Valley corridor and others with interest in the many fields of athletic endeavor. Every effort will be made to ensure that the leadership of the Club is diverse in that no specific business, organization, school, college, or university has a disproportionate number of officers serving at any one time. The Club leadership will seek to serve the entire Shenandoah Valley community, always conscious of the need to ensure that no organization, school, college, or university receives favorable treatment over another. No part of the Club’s net income or assets will inure to the benefit of any individual; no substantial part of its activities will consist of carrying on propaganda or other attempts to influence legislation; and it will not participate or intervene in any political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public office.

MEETINGS

The Club will meet nine times per year. The format will generally include a social period, dinner, business meeting, and guest speaker. The Program Committee will endeavor to bring quality speakers from the athletic community. Honorariums will be paid from dues and other revenues.

DINNER AND PROGRAM

Meetings, dinner, and program will be held monthly at the Ramada Inn. The day of the month will vary and depend on the availability of speakers. Cost is presently $14.00 for the buffet, which includes gratuity. Members will be notified in advance of each meeting. Any members making a reservation for himself and/or a guest, but who cannot attend the meeting for any reason will have their money refunded if they notify the SVAC in timely fashion. Members are encouraged to pay for meals in advance to minimize congestion at the door.

SERVICE

Although the Club’s Mission is social in nature, it may be appropriate to honor certain individuals or organizations for specific achievement relative to the promotion of athletics in the Valley or performance of athletic feats.

FUNDRAISING

Although the Club will graciously accept donations, it is not the intent of the membership to engage in active fundraising.

REVENUE

Revenue will be acquired through membership dues, modest profits on dinners and programs, guest fees, and auctions held at monthly meetings.
