Area Baseball Coaches
The area college baseball coaches
gave their outlook on the season. Spanky McFarland drew
laughs when he gave away two pairs of tickets to the Dukes new
stadium. One to whomever could tell him how many Major League
pitchers he had coached or developed, an impressive 11, and
another pair to whomever could give the answer to how many runs
his pitchers had given up in their most recent game, a less than
impressive 29.
November 2009

JMU's Matt Brady and Kenny Brooks, Bridgewater's Don Burgess and
Jean Willi, and EMU's Kirby Dean and Kevin Griffin. This
year Coach Kirby went before Coach Brooks, and claimed he was
"playing nice." Once again the two coaches ribbed
each other to the comic delight of one of the largest crowds in
some time for the club, as the coaches meeting is one of the
best year in and year out. Coach Brady said his team would
be a winner this year, and BC Coaches Burgess and Willi gave a
preview of their upcoming campaigns.

Dan Bonner

Popular NCAA basketball analyst Dan Bonner
was the April 2009 speaker and shared anecdotes from his years as a
coach and player and broadcaster. He told a particularly funny
story of when his broadcasting career got a lift, getting a call
from the man who created ACC basketball broadcasts, he believed it
to be a joke and hung up.

Feb 2009 - Voice of the Hokies Bill Roth told the club that if Beamers

Jan 2009

At our January meeting
,#38Jerry Venable, a career Harlem Globetrotter, told us about growing
up in family of basketball stars with a great high school coach, who was
like a father to him and a lifelong friend.
The November 2008 meeting featured the areas college
basketball coaches.

JMU Coach Kenny Brooks poked
his usual fun at some of the other coaches, especially Coach Kirby Dean
and his abilities or lack thereof on the hardwoods in their old Valley
District day. Coach Kirby got him back by unveiling and roasting a
blowup of Coach Brooks' bobblehead doll. We met two new coaches,
JMU's Matt Brady and BC's Don Burgess.
Coach Burgess said his kids getting out of bed on the wooden floorboards
of their home was reminiscent of the famed Roger Bergey stomp.
Coach Jean Willi of the Eagles humorously recanted the problems of early
season practices and a preseason bus breakdown. And Coach Kevin
Griffin poked good natured fun at Coach Dean by revealing a chart of
Kirby's many appearances in the newspaper and on air and dubbing him the
valley's Media Darling, saying he was told when he took the job that "if
Kirby goes up the street for a hamburger, the newspaper's gonna write an
article about him."
Lee Williams, Bridgewater College golf coach, was honored for his teams
amazing success at the meeting as well.

BACKGROUND
The Shenandoah Valley Athletic Club is a non-profit
organization created to bring together inhabitants of the Shenandoah Valley,
from Lexington to Woodstock, who share a common interest in scholastic,
intercollegiate, and professional athletics.
OUR MISSION
The Mission of the Shenandoah Valley Athletic Club is to
promote friendship, camaraderie, and goodwill among the inhabitants of the
Shenandoah Valley corridor and others with interest in the many fields of
athletic endeavor. Every effort will be made to ensure that the leadership of
the Club is diverse in that no specific business, organization, school, college,
or university has a disproportionate number of officers serving at any one time.
The Club leadership will seek to serve the entire Shenandoah Valley community,
always conscious of the need to ensure that no organization, school, college, or
university receives favorable treatment over another. No part of the Club’s net
income or assets will inure to the benefit of any individual; no substantial
part of its activities will consist of carrying on propaganda or other attempts
to influence legislation; and it will not participate or intervene in any
political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public
office.
MEETINGS
The Club will meet nine times per year. The format will
generally include a social period, dinner, business meeting, and guest speaker.
The Program Committee will endeavor to bring quality speakers from the athletic
community. Honorariums will be paid from dues and other revenues.
DINNER AND PROGRAM
Meetings, dinner, and program will be held monthly at the
Ramada Inn. The day of the month will vary and depend on the availability of
speakers. Cost is presently $15.00 for the buffet, $17.00 for guests, which includes gratuity.
Members will be notified in advance of each meeting. Any members making a
reservation for himself and/or a guest, but who cannot attend the meeting for
any reason will have their money refunded if they notify the SVAC in timely
fashion. Members are encouraged to pay for meals in advance to minimize
congestion at the door.
SERVICE
Although the Club’s Mission is social in nature, it may be
appropriate to honor certain individuals or organizations for specific
achievement relative to the promotion of athletics in the Valley or performance
of athletic feats.
FUNDRAISING
Although the Club will graciously accept donations, it is not
the intent of the membership to engage in active fundraising.
REVENUE
Revenue will be acquired through membership dues, modest
profits on dinners and programs, guest fees, and auctions held at monthly
meetings.
DUES
Dues are $35.00. Additional family
members can join for $30. New members admitted into membership during the fiscal
year will pay dues pro-rated over the year.
GUESTS
Members may bring in-town guests (in-town guests reside in
the Shenandoah Valley) to regular meetings; however, an in-town guest may not
attend more than two meetings in a fiscal year. Additionally, members may
bring out of town guests to regular meetings. The cost for ALL guests is
the cost of the meal, plus a 1.00 Club gratuity.
